Dexter and Anderson both are members of Blue Grass Lodge No. 4, Fraternal Order of Police. The FOP is co-sponsor with the Lexington Herald-Leader of this winter's renewal of the Golden Gloves set-up. The boss of all amateur sports in Kentucky was highly enthusiastic over indications for the ninth annual Golden Gloves tourney here and said he would be back when the boys begin their bouts at Woodland auditorium. Dexter is director of the free boxing school sponsored by the FOP at its gym, 351 1/2 West Short Street, and also is youth program director for the organization.Image

Warder, of Lexington, bounces a hard right off the chin of John Potter Jr., Greendale, while winning by decision the Open flyweight championship of the Golden Gloves tournament. The title was the second straight for Warder, who is a University of Kentucky student and lives at 140 Chenault Road. Last year, he won the Novice bantamweight crown. Potter also was a title holder in 1949, when he won the Novice flyweight championship. Warder and the winners of Tuesday night's Open championship at Woodland auditorium will represent this area in the Kentuckiana regional which will be held at Louisville from Wednesday through Friday. Louisville winners will go to the National Tournament of Champions at Chicago.Image

To make sure all entrants were physically sound, Golden Gloves headquarters used a mobile x-ray unit yesterday to make case studies of all the young athletes. The unit was furnished through the courtesy of the Kentucky Health Department and the Lexington and Fayette County Tuberculosis Association. From left to right, those waiting for their turns are Pat Hanley, 937 Williamson Street, who will defend his Open bantamweight title; Frank Lewis of Frankfort, a Novice light-heavyweight making his first appearance in the Gloves, and Cebert Burus, 246 Willard Street, a Novice middleweight also making his first Gloves attempt. Hanley, Lewis and Burus all are members of the Elks team.Image
